Customer Focus: Understands the students as customers of the work of schooling and the servant nature of leadership and acts accordingly. |
During my Principal Residency, when conferencing with students during bus or office discipline referrals, I listened with empathy and tried to utilize elements of restorative justice as I worked with students to come to solutions that would address the behavior concern rather than immediately punish. Below is an example of a student reflection sheet that was used with students as I conferenced with them about their behavior along with a parent contact log where I communicated with parents and invited them to be apart of the restorative process. Reflection Sheet Parent Contact Log |
Delegation: Effectively assigns work tasks to others in ways that provide learning experiences for them and in ways that ensure the efficient operation of the school. |
As a Principal Intern, I was assigned to the back carpool area each afternoon. This meant that I had a duty station that had to be manned each afternoon. Some days this was problematic because I was often needed to perform the duties of my principal in her absence. Therefore, I revised our Duty Schedule to include more staff members to be on duty in the back carpool area to allow more flexibility of my time, as well as, increase the safety of this area during dismissal times. Below is the revised Afternoon Duty Schedule |
Dialogue/ Inquiry: Is skilled in creating a risk free environment for engaging people in conversations that explore issues, challenges or bad relationships that are hindering school performance. |
Throughout my Principal Residency, I conducted a variety of meetings with staff to discuss student data. At the beginning of the school year, we began our year by completing a 4-Square to discuss trends in last year's data. This discussion continued throughout the year. I also conducted an Educational Garage Sale to discuss items of our school that needed to be kept, changed, or disposed of. |
Emotional Intelligence: Is able to manage oneself through self awareness and self management and is able to manage relationships through empathy, social awareness and relationship management. This competency is critical to building strong, transparent, trusting relationships throughout the school community. |
Through the NCLA course work, I have had the opportunity to learn more about my personality type, my triggers, and my purpose/why for what I do. The following courses have helped me to develop my emotional intelligence as a school executive. * Maxwell Gold *True Colors *Crucial Accountability/Conversations *BB&T Leadership Training |
Environmental Awareness: Becomes aware and remains informed of external and internal trends, interests and issues with potential impacts on school policies, practices, procedures and positions. |
Throughout my Principal Residency, I have taken the opportunity to be an active participant in PBIS Meetings, School Improvement Team (SIT) Meetings, and LCPS Monthly Board Meetings. These meetings have helped keep me informed about the trends, policies, and practices of the school. |
Global Perspective: Understands the competitive nature of the new global economy and is clear about the knowledge and skills students will need to be successful in this economy. |
As an instructional leader, having a knowledge of the skills needed at each grade level and being able to discuss curriculum with teachers has allowed me the opportunity to assist them in their efforts to prepare students to become productive global citizens. I also worked with my mentor principal to coordinate a vertical planning meeting between my residency school, (Banks) and our feeder middle school (Frink) for our 5th and 6th grade teachers to collaboratively plan and discuss gaps in learning. I also had the opportunity to attend the Global Institute at the ASCD Conference in Boston, MA. where I learned from a variety of educators across the nation on ways to promote global awareness in our schools. |
Judgment: Effectively reaching logical conclusions and making high quality decisions based on available information. Giving priority and caution to significant issues. Analyzing and interpreting complex information. |
Throughout my Principal Residency, I effectively reached logical conclusions and made high quality decisions based on the available information as I conducted investigations for bus and office discipline referrals, as well as, assisted my guidance counselor with bully investigations. Below is a letter sent home to a parent following a formal bully investigation. |
Organizational Ability: Effectively plans and schedules one’s own and the work of others so that resources are used appropriately, such as scheduling the flow of activities and establishing procedures to monitor projects. |
Completing evaluations in the NCEES system for educators is one of the responsibilities of a school administrator. I assisted my mentor principal throughout my residency to complete observations for Standard, Standard Abbreviated, and Comprehensive teachers. This meant that we had to develop a schedule to monitor the observation process and ensure that teachers were observed in a timely fashion. Below is the schedule that my mentor principal and I used to document observations that were completed in NCEES. Observation Schedule |
Personal Ethics and Values: Consistently exhibits high standards in the areas of honesty, integrity, fairness, stewardship, trust, respect, and confidentiality. |
As a Principal Resident, but functioning in the role of the Assistant Principal at my intern school, I had to conduct myself in the most professional manner as I fulfilled the roles and duties of the position as I worked with students, staff, and parents. One of the additional roles I fulfilled during my residency was as the Testing Coordinator. This meant that I had to maintain a secure test environment and ensure that the testing materials were keep in a secure location. The high standards of honesty, integrity, trust, respect, and confidentiality was seen as I conducted testing sessions within the school each nine weeks for benchmark assessments. Below is a check-in/check-out sheet that was used to ensure that testing materials were distributed and returned at the end of the testing session each day. 4th Grade Math NC Check-In Sheet |
Personal Responsibility for Performance: Proactively and continuously improves performance by focusing on needed areas of improvement and enhancement of strengths; actively seeks and effectively applies feedback from others; takes full responsibility for one’s own achievements. |
I have shown personal responsibility for my performance in a variety of ways throughout my Principal Residency. Some examples of this include:
|
Responsiveness: Does not leave issues, inquiries or requirements for information go unattended. Creates a clearly delineated structure for responding to requests/ situations in an expedient manner. |
One way in which I exhibited responsiveness was by keeping a parent contact log. This helped me to establish a process for following back up with parents as needed to address their concerns. |
Results Orientation: Effectively assumes responsibility. Recognizes when a decision is required. Takes prompt action as issues emerge. Resolves short-term issues while balancing them against long-term goals. |
One of the roles as a Principal Resident was coordinating field trip requests. Teachers would submit a Field Trip Request to me for approval at the school level and District Level. I worked with our Bus Garage and feeder high school to secure buses for each of our field trips. I also had to coordinate drivers for each of these trips. The requests had to be submitted at least a month in advance in order to be approved. Ensuring these were processed in a timely fashion while balancing the other responsibilities of being an intern required skills Results Orientation. Linked is the Google Spreadsheet I created to keep track of Field Trips for the 2017-18 school year. |
Sensitivity: Effectively perceives the needs and concerns of others; deal tactfully with others in emotionally stressful situations or in conflict. Knows what information to communicate and to whom. Relates to people of varying ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. |
One example of how I dealt with a stressful situation occurred when I informed the staff in an email about how to address parent and community concerns about the presence of law enforcement on our school campus. Our local law enforcement had to come to campus to ensure the safety of one of our students whose parent was court ordered not to be on the same school campus as his child, but was seen sitting in his car parked in our bus parking lot prior to the start of school. Law Enforcement Letter |
Systems Thinking: Understands the Interrelationships and impacts of school and district influences, systems and external stakeholders, and applies that understanding to advancing the achievement of the school or team. |
Working with the SIT Team to develop goals and action steps for our school while using the NCSTAR system has helped me apply knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the processes needed for overall school achievement. Below is an agenda with notes from a previous meeting where we discussed objectives that were coming due along with its goals and action steps. SIT Team Agenda |
Technology: Effectively utilizes the latest technologies to continuously improve the management of the school and enhance student instruction. |
Lenoir County is a 1:1 county. Each student has his/her own iPad. Teachers have a MacBook and iPad in order to utilize technology. Therefore technology is woven into the daily functions of the instructional day. One way I was able to utilize technology to enhance student instruction was accomplished as I used the App "Educreations" to have students set and monitor SMART goals in a 3rd grade classroom for Reading. Planning for Success Credential |
Time Management: Effectively uses available time to complete work tasks and activities that lead to the achievement of desired work or school results. Runs effective meetings. |

Visionary: Encourages Imagineering by creating an environment and structure to capture stakeholders dreams of what the school could become for all the students. |
While working with my mentor principal, I engaged in an activity where we asked staff to create a visual of what urgency would look like for teachers and students in the classroom. Teachers worked together to discuss the topic and what this would look like for each of them. Below is one example of the visual teachers created to depict why urgency matters. #UrgencyMatters |
