Principal Residency: Banks Elementary School
Personal Reflection
Three essential elements of leadership can best be described as it relates to the head, the heart, and the feet of that leader. I began my Principal Residency confident in my ability to lead a school as an instructional leader. My previous experience as a Teaching and Learning Coach working primarily with beginning teachers and teachers within a low performing school in Wayne County paired with my experience as a Curriculum Specialist for Southeast Elementary School located in Lenoir County had prepared me for instructional roles I would fulfill during my residency as I engaged in conversations with teachers regarding curriculum and teaching practices. This is the head of a leader, the knowledge of curriculum I possess which makes me successful as a school leader.
With regards to the heart of a leader, the knowledge I have gleaned about people through relationship building has assisted me in my efforts to establish and maintain a collaborative culture within my residency school. I began my internship by conducting a True Colors Inventory, which helped me begin to identify personality characteristics and make connections with various staff based on my own True Color Inventory results. However, one of the strongest ways in which I built relationships with the staff and students at my intern school was achieved by just being visible throughout the hallways, cafeteria, and playground. It was during those moments, I could engage in brief conversations and get to know my students and staff one on one as individuals apart of the whole school community.
Lastly, the feet of a leader. For me, this was the knowledge of systems and processes needed to effectively manage and run a school. During my residency, this was my greatest area of growth. I learned a great deal about how to manage the human complexity of people to resolve conflicts, as well as, the internal and external programs needed to efficiently and effectively manage a school. As my knowledge of systems and processes grew, I felt more confident in my ability to make the right decisions to move the school along the pathway of success.
