Specialized Trainings
The following specialized trainings were offered throughout my experience as a member of the North Carolina Leadership Academy (NCLA) and during my Principal Residency.
AEI, Washington, D.C.
From this opportunity, I learned what topics were on the minds of policy makers at the Federal level in Washington.
From this opportunity, I learned what topics were on the minds of policy makers at the Federal level in Washington.
- I was able to determine correlations between the topics being discussed on Capitol Hill with what was on the forefront of the minds of our policy makers at the state level. I also had the opportunity to discuss with policy makers the best avenue to voice concerns at the local level, as well as, understanding how to interpret policy to best meet the needs of my teachers and students.
ASCD Conference, Boston, MA
I was empowered and transformed as I was in presence of some the most amazing educators and public figures. Dr. Eric Jensen taught me how to move and transform my staff through relationship building. Dr. Jill Biden gave me hope and redirection with her words of encouragement and affirmation that I am making a difference in the lives of students each and every day. Ret. Gen. Colin Powell reassured and comforted me with his words. His story of his time with the former President Ronald Regan helped me to understand the power I have within me to be a leader and use this power to make decisions. While at the conference, I also attended several sessions on working with students and parents of poverty where I took lessons learned and will apply them in my school of residency and in the future. The overall messages of the sessions attended on poverty were celebration and affirmation to ensure motivation.

BB&T Training (LDIP)
By understanding the strengths and limitations of my leadership style, I am able to adapt with situations to ensure that my weaknesses do not impede my ability to lead and manage a school by learning how to appreciate the different leadership styles in others was the major takeaway from this specialized training.

Digital Story Telling, Durham, NC
Who am I? How have my past experiences shaped me into the leader that I am today? How the power of one’s story can have in an effort to transform and move people into action. These were the major takeaways from this experience. In addition, I also learned how to build and produce an iMovie using the available technology.

EdCamp, Louisburg, H.S.
Major takeaways from this experience included how to design and implement an “unconference” event. Sessions were determined by the topics or questions of the group in attendance. Each session was unique in that the participants lead the discussion. We shared our expertise, which resulted in a learning experience by everyone in attendance.

Flipped Classroom with Dr. Lodge McCammon
From this training, I learned about an instructional method teachers could use with their students to demonstrate mastery of a concept, but also a way I, as a school administrator, can conduct staff meetings and model this practice with the staff. The flipped classroom method consists of the students making short videos to reteach or explain material that was just previously taught or discussed.

Hill Center Literacy, Durham, NC
In this specialized training, I learned the key components of a balanced literacy program, as well as, what core and small group instruction should look like. This helped to build my capacity as an instructional leader while working within an elementary school as a Principal Resident to ensure that literacy instruction was robust and integrated across all content areas in Grades K-5.

LGBTQ Training with Matt Hickson, DPLA
The purpose of this training was to provide an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the common practices found in schools and how these practices create a system of inequality for some students. I learned how to appreciate and celebrate LGBTQ students by listening to their voices speak from the perspective of "If my teacher only knew…" . This was an eye-opening experience for me because despite my efforts to be inclusive of all students, I was unaware of the impact such practices as choosing one boy and one girl for an award resulting in excluding some from being recognized and the opportunity to participate equally in the learning experiences, which goes against my core beliefs and values as a school leader.

Maxwell Training/Leadership Gold with Dr. Ruth Steininger
What I gained most from this specialized training was the opportunity to determine my why or purpose for what I do every day. I was provided with an opportunity to engage in deep reflection which resulted in me building a vision statement to lead and guide my work as a school administrator.

MTSS, Hill Center, Durham, NC
The purpose of this training was to provide an opportunity for future school leaders to understand the three tiers of instruction, what interventions could be put into place to best meet the needs of students who were not successful with core instruction alone, and how to establish a leadership team who would be responsible for data and assist teachers in their efforts to identify a problem, collect data, and analyze to find a solution. (TIPS)

NCPAPA Conference, Pinehurst, NC
At the NCPAPA Conference, I was able to network with various principals and assistant principals about current issues that are being faced in our schools. I gathered ideas from them on ways to best utilize technology for the greatest benefit of students when working in a 1:1 county. I also was able to speak with some principals who were facing a similar challenges with class size at the elementary level and how they were addressing the class size mandate.

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Certification
As a future administrator, it is important for me to know how to deescalate a situation with a student. I also need to know how to ensure the safety of students and staff when a situation arises that a student’s behavior causes him or her to be a danger to themselves and/or others. Having the opportunity to attend this specialized training will help me in my efforts as a school administrator maintain the safety and security of my students and staff within my building while keeping the best interest of the child at the forefront of my mind.

Poverty and Pedagogy (ASCD)
As a future administrator, this specialized training helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the impacts poverty has on our students and ways I can revise current practices to be more inclusive and less punitive for students facing poverty.

Restorative Discipline
Upon reflecting on the lesson learned from this training, I realized that current disciplinary practices such as suspension should be reconsidered. This often is an easy solution, but does not always address the problem behavior.

Ron Clark Academy, Atlanta GA
Movement and Music create the Magic in this place. Students are celebrated. Rather than seeing student work displayed, you see pictures of students. The House System creates a family environment where everyone is appreciated and learning is celebrated. Standards are set high, but students rise to the occasion. Teachers are also treated like professionals and held to a high standard as well.

Rural Education Conference, Columbus, OH
It was interesting to hear how school executives from across the nation dealt with common issues such as lack of parental support, teacher retention, and truancy. One major takeaway was the professional development and training that some states put into place for their teachers to ensure that they are life-long learners and committed to excellence for all students.

Social Justice/Equity, Whitakers, NC
This training allowed me the opportunity to uncover my own personal biases and beliefs about individuals and/or groups of people by engaging in deep conversations and reflection. This was personally beneficial to me because it allowed me to get to know my cohort members on a deeper level, as well as, understand and appreciate those who grew up in a different background than myself. As a school executive, it helped me to better understand how to work with students, parents, and teachers who may not agree or share my same perspective on an issue based on his or her own personal beliefs and values.
