Problem of Practice
While utilizing the TIPS problem solving model of MTSS with four Second Grade teachers during PLC meetings that will be conducted twice a month, teachers will identify a precise problem statement (What? When? Where? Who? Why? and How Often?), establish a specific goal and timeline for the problem to be addressed, identify the current levels of students as determined by BOY mClass Assessment data in Text Reading Comprehension (TRC) and DIBELS, and offer solutions (By Who? By When?) in an effort to increase overall reading proficiency from BOY to EOY. This will be an ongoing process as mClass progress monitoring data is discussed throughout the year.
Intended Outcomes
One of the identified precise problem areas commonly found in 2nd grade students is their inability to transfer oral reading fluency to responding to text in a written format. While focusing on Text Reading Comprehension (TRC) question stems, teachers will explicitly teach students how to use text evidence to increase their overall comprehension of the story. Students will engage in robust literacy instruction that includes exposure to multiple genres of texts both fiction and nonfiction to increase their vocabulary, phonics, fluency, and oral reading comprehension. Students will take part in whole group literacy instruction, as well as, small guided reading literacy instruction to focus on identified problem areas. Students will be asked to read and respond to text while utilizing TRC question stems. The teacher will provide corrective instruction both in whole group and in small guided reading groups to assist students with transferring oral reading fluency (ORF), which is apart of DIBELS to being able to respond to text in a written format or Text Reading Comprehension (TRC) portion of mClass assessments.
Ultimate Goal
Our goal is to have 70% of second grade students within the four classes reading at a level M as measured by EOY mClass TRC assessment. We currently have 83 second grade students. In order to reach our 70% school wide goal for proficiency, 58 students would need to score at a level M or higher. According to the BOY mClass assessments in TRC, we have 22 out of the 58 students who have scored at a level M or higher on the TRC portion of the mClass assessment. The number of student proficient at MOY mClass assessments in TRC has dropped to 10 out of 83 students.
